Some 50% of adults experience back pain at some time in their lives. At any given time, 25% of adults have acute or chronic back pain. Movement training is a sensible way to manage pain, and non-weight-bearing exercises like Pilates can be done even by those struggling with pain. As any well-trained Pilates teacher will attest, a proper diagnosis for what’s generating the symptoms should be done first, then a well-trained instructor can design a safe and effective exercise program for you.
Pilates is gentle. Many of the exercises are performed in reclining or sitting positions, and most are low impact and partially weight bearing. Pilates is so safe, it is used in physical therapy facilities to rehabilitate injuries.
If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old. If it is completely flexible at 60, you are young.
